Summer Island Film Screening at Tokyo Architecture Festival 2026

On 23 May 2026, the Tokyo screening of "Summer Island" took place at Hibiya Okuroji as part of the Tokyo Architecture Festival 2026 collaborative programme. 

It was a great honour to have the occasion graced by His Excellency Ambassador Ong Eng Chuan from the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo, as well as Associate Professor Shunsuke Kurakata, Executive Committee Chairperson of the Tokyo Architecture Festival.

Inspired by the spirit of Takeshi Kitano’s Kikujiro and the gentle musical sensibilities of Joe Hisaishi, Summer Island follows the journey of a Japanese father and daughter through Singapore’s urban landscape. Through their eyes, the film presents several notable architectural works, including Plantation Village, House of Tan Yeok Nee and the Singapore Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka by DP Architects, SIT Campus Heart by WOHA Architects, and Jurong Lake Gardens by Liu & Wo Architects.

At its heart, the film reflects on the connections between people and places, and the cultural exchange between Singapore and Japan as part of SJ60.

It was truly a proud Singaporean moment to share the architectural stories of our little red dot with a Tokyo audience so deeply engaged with architecture, urbanism, and design.

2026年5月23日、東京建築祭2026の連携プログラムとして日比谷OKUROJIにて開催された『Summer Island（シンガポールの夏）』東京上映会にお越しいただいた皆さま、誠にありがとうございました。

当日は、在東京シンガポール共和国大使館のオン・エンチュアン大使閣下、そして東京建築祭 実行委員長の倉方俊輔准教授にご臨席いただき、大変光栄な機会となりました。

『Summer Island』は、北野武監督作品『菊次郎の夏』の空気感と、久石譲氏の繊細な音楽的感性に着想を得た作品です。日本人の父と娘がシンガポールの都市風景を巡る旅を通して、Plantation Village、House of Tan Yeok Nee、DP Architectsによる2025年大阪・関西万博シンガポール館、WOHA ArchitectsによるSIT Campus Heart、そしてLiu & Wo ArchitectsによるJurong Lake Gardensなど、シンガポールを代表する建築作品を紹介しています。

本作は、人と場所とのつながり、そしてSJ60の一環としてのシンガポールと日本の文化交流をテーマに描いています。

建築や都市、デザインに深い関心を持つ東京の観客の皆さまに、“Little Red Dot” と呼ばれるシンガポールの建築的な物語を共有できたことは、シンガポール人として本当に誇らしい瞬間でした。
